Oct. 23, 2025 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Please join us to support World Polio Day, Thursday, October 23, 2025, for the “Pints for Polio” fundraising event at the Craft Food Hall, 200 5th Ave. Waltham, MA 02451. Rotary International has been a key player supporting the polio eradication efforts for many years, raising funds and awareness across the globe. Since 1988, we've seen a worldwide reduction in polio cases of 99.9%. Only two countries remain polio-endemic: Afghanistan and Pakistan. We are so close! Right now, all donations are matched 2:1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, tripling your impact! This is in that spirit; The Rotary Club of Weston and Wayland continue to organize this annual event for the "World Polio Day”. The club is actively inviting all the other clubs in the district to join us in any capacity (guests, volunteers, you name it). Besides sharing the joy and visibility that will come from the success of this event, many other perks will be offered, discounts for “The Comedy Studio” memberships and shows (https://www.thecomedystudio.com), free entertainment during the event by the band “West of Willow” ( https://www.facebook.com/WestofWillow), and much more! Please mark your calendar, use this link (https://raise.rotary.org/District7910/fundraiser711) to donate and, reach out directly to the club of Weston and Wayland to register to attend and to volunteer. We are counting on your presence! Rotary launched PolioPlus in 1985 and was a founding member of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. The eradication polio is one of Rotaries longest standing and most significant efforts. Through decades of commitment and work by Rotary and our partners, more than 2.5 billion children have received the oral polio vaccine. We have reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide and we won’t stop until we end the disease for good. |

How did Rotary eradicate Polio?
In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Rotary has contributed over $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary's advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.
The eradication of polio is one of Rotary’s longest-standing and most significant efforts working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years, and we've made incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've helped to reduce polio cases by more than 99.9 percent.
Purple Pinky Day:
When a child receives their life-saving polio drops on mass polio immunization days, their little finger is painted with a purple dye so it is clear they have received their polio vaccine. Purple Pinkie Day is also a fundraiser where families in the US give $1 to pay for inoculating kids in developing countries, so US children who donate also get their fingers painted purple.

This week we will hear from Member John Marchiony. John's been very busy this year because he's been involved with Adaptive Sports New England as the Board Chair. Adaptive Sports New England is devoted to helping more people with mobility and visual disabilities to play more sports more often. John met founder Joe Walsh at Dartmouth College and followed him into many activities and adventures, and may have learned the most valuable lessons atop the 35-foot-tall snow sculptures they helped build. John lived in the same dorm as Diana Golden, who was inducted into the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame with a citation that read: “She persuaded the ski world to treat all athletes the same, regardless of ability or, in her case, disability.” This perspective, along with Adaptive Sports New England’s mantra of “more sports, more often, closer to home” guides John’s engagement. John, who'll be joined by Joe Walsh at our Rotary Club meeting, is excited to share the mission, highlights, and invitations to engage with Adaptive Sports New England and its community of athletes and families. Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is more than a training—it’s an investment in you, your club, and the future of Rotary. On January 17th at Assabet High School in Marlborough, MA, Rotarians from across several districts will come together for a dynamic day of learning, connection, and leadership growth.RLI is designed for Rotarians at every stage of their Rotary journey, not just officers or future presidents. Participants gain a deeper understanding of Rotary, sharpen leadership and communication skills, and walk away with practical tools that can be used immediately at the club and district level. Just as important, RLI creates space to exchange ideas, share best practices, and build meaningful relationships with fellow Rotarians. Clubs thrive when members are informed, engaged, and empowered—and RLI does exactly that. Rotarians who attend often return energized, inspired, and better equipped to lead projects, strengthen membership, and elevate their club’s impact. If you are looking to grow as a leader, deepen your Rotary experience, and help shape the future of our organization, RLI on January 17th is an opportunity you won’t want to miss. Seats are limited—register now and be part of the momentum moving Rotary forward. Strong leaders build strong clubs. Strong clubs build a stronger Rotary. To register for Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI), use this link https://www.ismyrotaryclub.org/wp_api_1-2/R_Event.cfm?EventID=77861836 IMPORTANT: Once you have clicked the above link, you will be on the registration page, and you have two options at the bottom of the page: 1) If you have not attended RLI before or forgot your RLI Login, then you will need to register as a guest. 2) If you have previously attended RLI, then register as an RLI Member. |

A Zoom meeting you will not want to miss!!! This week we will be meeting on Zoom with an amazing former member of the Rotary Club of Weston & Wayland, Michael Dexter-Smith, who will be joining us from Western North Carolina to share exciting news about a new Youth Hub coming to Rosman, a small and economically challenged town in Appalachia. The Brevard Rotary is leading this transformational three-year initiative, a $1 million investment in Appalachian youth. Through this effort, they have acquired and developed the TenTwentySix Youth Hub in Rosman, creating a dedicated space designed to support, inspire, and empower young people in the community. Michael Dexter-Smith describes himself as an Entrepreneurial Philanthropist, someone who builds ventures with purpose and applies business discipline to community impact. Over the past decade, Michael has devoted much of his time to community leadership. As President of his Rotary Club in Hawaii, he led membership growth from 40 to nearly 90 members, making it the second largest club in the Hawaiian Islands After relocating to Transylvania County, North Carolina, he helped grow the Rotary Club of Brevard from 9 to more than 50 members, focused squarely on measurable community impact. The club emphasizes action over ceremony, just meaningful work in the community. Michael currently serves as Treasurer of the Rotary Club and its Foundation and is Chapter Chair for SCORE Western North Carolina. Bring Your Service Project Ideas Part 2! We had some great conversations at our first service project ideas meeting, and now we’re excited to build on that momentum. At our April 2 dinner meeting, we’ll move into a second phase continuing the conversation and shaping the projects that will define our impact together. If you couldn’t attend the first session, this is the perfect opportunity to jump in. Your ideas, perspective, and voice truly matter, and we would love to have every member in the room. This is your chance to engage, connect, and help guide what we do as a club. We strongly encourage everyone to attend, your participation makes a difference. Please remember to register, and we look forward to seeing you on April 2. All are welcome to join us. Note: Rotary District 7910 has set aside funds for new service projects, so come prepared with any ideas you may have, big or small, for projects our club could take on this term and next. |
